"I purchased this product after we adopted George. After having only female cats for quite awhile and losing one to cancer, the Vet reminded me that male cats do need to be even more encouraged to drink alot of water because of their tendancy towards urinary tract infections simply because of their structure. George (we believe) came from a home where he had developed the habit of drinking from a toilet rather than a water bowl, so we needed to try to switch him around. We were also wondering how Mocha (our female) would adapt.
THIS WORKED BEAUTIFULLY!!!
Both cats LOVED it within hours of turning it on!! Both prefer to drink from the top of the fountain where the water runs down rather than the pool. NO problem with them getting enough water in their system as they both drink out of this alot -- I think Moe is also drinking more than she used to. While George is still facinated with any running water, at least he's only drinking out of his fountain rather than other avenues.
With the 108 oz model, I really only have to clean/refill once a week. I find it easy to clean and maintain. I do agree that you do need to lift out the pump and clean the hair out of it regularly (something you don't tumble to when you first get the product, but very necessary.) It's very quiet (only gets a little noisy as an early warning system that it's running low on water), and no splashing at all. When you refill, it takes a couple of minutes for the pump to prime and the water to start flowing again, and the kids love it so much, I get 'the look' for those two minutes when they think I broke it and it's not working right anymore!
I would recommend to others and buy again in a heartbeat! I wish I would have stumbled over this years ago!"

Clean water and fun for your cat

"I was worried that my 2 cats would be freaked out by the water bowl, but bought it with high hopes. Not only do they get clean, fresh water, but they love to watch the water flow down the arch. They stand there mesmerized and drink a LOT more water than they ever did. Easy for you to clean but watch for hair clumps in the motor-my long haired guys clogged it up and it took me a while to realize why the water wasn't running as well as it used to. Easy to take apart and reassemble and easy to fill up daily. Highly reccommended. "

"After procrastinating, I finally got this a few months ago. Both my cats LOVE this! I notice that they drink so much more with this than they ever did with still water in a bowl. With 2 cats, the filters need replacing once a month. I also have to clean it 2-3 times a month but cleaning is quick and easy and I can get it cleaned with soap and water and back in action in just a few minutes. The water tank has to be refilled at least every other day when the level gets low but it only takes a moment to pop out the tank, refill it and put it back and I don't even have to turn the fountain off! I wouldn't ever go back to using the old water dish!"

FIXING THE MOTOR PROBLEM

"II LOVE this drinking fountain. Got one for my cat, who took to it immediately. Before I would change her water bowl at least twice a day because she was so fussy that if a hair got in it, she wouldn't drink from it. She loves this thing and only drinks from the top where the water runs fresh. Then got a second one for my two dogs, and they both love it. I only change the water on the cat's once a week. Dogs are more messy and I change their water twice a week. This is what I discovered for those of you who are having problems with the motor. I've had both of mine for close to two years and am replacing my motor on one for the first time. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY when you get your product. You must clean the motor PROPERLY when changing the water (not every time, but at least every other time). It's very easy to do, but if you don't read the instructions you miss the part about using a tweezers to remove the white spinner which is held on with a magnet. Then use a Q-tip to clean the inside. But I can almost guarantee you that 99 percent of your motor problems can be fixed by the following: Number one, it specifically tells you when refilling the water tank, you must not only fill the reservior, but you MUST fill the portion that holds the filter also. If not, it can burn the motor out. The instructions also tell you to check the on/off control for a loose connection. There is a screw on the on/off control that needs to be tightened occasionally. If it becomes loose, it stops the motor from functioning. I've had to tighten mine with a screw driver at least two times already on both fountains, and it immediately fixed the problem. I'm sure that this is the cause for many of the complaints about the motor not working. Other than that, you will LOVE this product as much as I do, and have even given them as gifts to friends and family members. As for the one complaint I read about mold forming, I've never heard or seen that happen before. Can't help you there. It just seems like a fluke."

"Our cat took a few moments to scope out this fountain when it was first introduced but he soon got the gist of the thing and he seems to love it. There is something about flowing water and cats--they are drawn to the motion, I suppose. It is easy to clean and refill, even has a reservoir for those times you might be away for a while. I highly recommend this product. We have had it for over six months and it has worked perfectly."

"When I first bought this, I loved it. It worked beautifully for several months. My two cats were leary at first of the humming noise that this makes, but got used to it eventually. The water stays relatively cold, and they both liked drinking from the top of the fountain. This does need to be emptied and cleaned frequently because litter/dirt/cat hair gets into the water bowl. After less than a year, my waterer started making loud noises and the fountain quit working. I checked to make sure that the pump and all the equipment was intact, cleaned it, unplugged it and plugged it back in...nothing worked and I had to throw it away."

"Of course your pets enjoy fresh water but this fountain is not the answer. It does not keep the water fresh and becomes dirty rather easily. My dog, who drinks filtered and non-filtered water, did not enjoy the taste of the water after it ran through this fountain. However, the hubby and I decided to keep it hoping he'd get more adjusted to it, and he eventually did. But there were other problems: after religiously cleaning the fountain every three days it still grew mold on the inside within four months. I wrote to Petmate for a solution (figuring this was a defect) and the company never bothered to reply. I wound up with a product I can't use and a bunch of filters for it. So, in short, bad taste for the animals and prone to mold, from a company that doesn't stand up for its products."

A great product for my cats

"I bought this fountain shortly after introducing a kitten to my two 10-year-old cats. It took a while for the older cats to get used to the fountain -- maybe about a week. In fact, they still jump a little when water from the reservoir gurgles. The kitten took to it right away and enjoyed playing with the flowing water. I also feel good knowing that the cats' water is constantly filtered. I clean the fountain once a week, and I don't have to fill the reservoir every day, as I would do with a regular water dish, which saves me time during the week. I tend to refill the reservoir every third day."

"I have purchased 2 of these. The first lasted about a year and half, but the motor quit on me. I cleaned it regularly but it just stopped. So I bought a new one and the motor started making a loud humming type noise and it quit working after only 6 weeks. I called their customer no-service number and explained the several problems I was having and all they kept repeating was send it back and we might "repair or replace" but... "read the warranty. Its repair or replace" but..."repair or replace" I have tried this product twice and had enough."

"I have two kitties, so I love this water feeder. The great part about it, is PetMate. I was going to buy another feeder because my motor was sluggish and clogged. PetMate's website gives you cleaning instructions! So you can buy a new motor on line, or you can learn how to clean it. The motor has lasted me 3 years so far :-) I recommend this to anyone."

"I have owned 3 of these and each one has had the pump quit. I've kept it clean and made sure the hair stayed out of the pump but each one has failed only for me to purchase another cause the major chain stores don't sell replacement pumps. I wish they did.
Oh and by the way don't put it in a dish washer to clean, it will melt it....I found out the hard way. All and all it's a good product and I do recommend it to anyone but keep in mind the pumps last less than a year, in my experience...Sorry"

"I bought this for my sister. She has two cats and one had pretty much stopped drinking water since she got the facet fixed in the bathroom! That cat LOVES this fountain. Her other cat doesn't care that much about it and continues to drink from the regular water bowl. It is a true life saver as the facet-drinking cat was starting to have digestive tract problems. "We used to have the Drinkwell Fountain but it wasn't very quiet and had substantial hard water stains after about a year of use. So we decided to give the Petmate version a try and couldn't be more pleased! My cat is still getting used to it but I'm already a huge fan. There is no noise from the motor or the flowing water and the reservoir helps the water last."

"Both of my cats are drinking more water; they like to drink from the top of the fountain, and use the bowl to clean their paws. (The filter keeps it much cleaner than their old water bowl.) The pump is very quiet; it only gets a bit noisy when the water level is low. (Since it is on a tile floor, I put a cloth underneath to absorb the vibration.) Water can be easily added directly to the bowl. Overall, it's very easy to use and clean."
