Exactly what it's supposed to be Date: December 26, 2008
"These are old school, simple, inexpensive, easy to set up. They work and they last. I've got one in my 20L, and I think the one in my 29 is the same, it's ten years old."

Aquatic Gardens Undergravel Filters Date: December 23, 2008
"I have had this product for 2 days now, it may be a little loud but it does it's job. I have a question if someone can tell me, is the filter part supposed to be above or slightly below the water."

"I purchased the underground filters for my 30 gal tank--the product is working well, fits in the tank perfectly and was very easy to install. I would recommend this product--good value for the money."

Wonderful Product Date: March 21, 2008
"I have a fancy goldfish in a 14 gallon tank and it gets so dirty so fast. With the undergravel filter the tank has never been clearer. I can actually go a week before any type of water change, where before I would have to clean at least every three days."

Better than Penn-Plax Date: January 21, 2008
"These Aquatic Gardens filters are obviously made by Penn-Plax because they're nearly identical to the P-P "Undertow" line. However, the AG filters are better than P-P because it's possible to twist and remove the downtubes after they've been installed without breakage. The AG uses two large flat tabs that engage in a twist socket on the filter floor whereas the P-P uses three flimsy teeth that are impossible to remove--even with the unit removed from the tank, without breakage. The Aquatic Gardens downtubes can even be removed (for repositioning, or cleaning) while in a tank full of water.
The plastic floor is somewhat thin, as noted by other reviewers, but patient and careful removal of the cross-flow tabs has resulted in zero breakage in the four units I've installed. It's strong enough to hold the gravel and even quite of bit of pushing and shoving of plant pots and ornaments into place. I really like these UGFs, though I'm dropping my old school ways and installing reverse flow power heads and bio-wheel power filters nowadays.
These filters may be modified to fit minor deviations in form factor. I used silicone sealant and plastic to extend a 5 1/2 gal filter to fit a 7 gal All-Glass mini-bow. The pictures show the floor before I cut the holes / slots in the new white plastic. I glued the three floor locking donuts to the bottom of the white semi-circular sections for added support. Also show is a P-P downtube with broken tabs (tough to see in the little pics)."

Does its job but... Date: December 12, 2007
"it is really flimsy in quality. It is very easy to break while trying to remove the tabs so you can connect the two pieces. The lift tubes are strong though and are very wide which make it easier to clean them.
It still does a great job keeping the tank crystal clear (with frequent water changes) and my fish healthy.

I would also recommend using the next size up air pump. For instances if you have a 20 gal. tank, use a 40 gallon air pump. Unless you have bottom feeders."

Works Great UGF Date: September 11, 2007
"It's great for keeping the tank clean. I have a 55 gallon tank, and had to hook up four tubes.. my pump was weak and had to purchase a very powerful one... just like the first post suggested. One draw back i find with UGF is some gravel can get caught under them.. its best to wash the gravel and remove any small pieces and dust from the gravel first."

IT is great if you know how to use it. Date: October 14, 2006
"I have owned many filters in the last 15 yrs of fish keeping. I find the undergravel to be one of the best. I do not care for the power heads unless i use to of them. in reverse the direction so it cirulates the water up through the water. When you do this it works great. Though bottom feeders don't care for it to much. But if you use the stock set up, be sure to get a air pump that is bigger than what you really need. works better. I also recommend using a product called waste control about every 3-4 months. It destoys all the stuff that settles under the filter. But be careful with this product, it does raise the ammonia levels when used. Their is a warning on the container."

ok but not Date: June 23, 2006
"This filter is awesome with fresh water tanks, but no good for SALTWATER tanks. Because the sand will get stuck in the tubes! I would recommend this to a fresh water kepper but not a SALTWATER one!"
