"we used to live in an apartment and any noise in the hallway or from neighbors would make my dog bark. when i first got it, it worked great. after awhile, the refills got a bit expensive. and when the battery ran out, i had a hard time finding the correct battery size for replacement. by the time i replaced the battery a week later. my dog wasnt afraid of it anymore. he would then bark until the citronella ran out."

Battery Investment!!!

"When we first got the collar we loved it and it worked immediately. Once the batteries ran out (very quickly-like less than a month) it went downhill from there. They require a battery size that is very hard to find elsewhere and is $8-9 at Petco. We have almost spent as much in batteries as we did the collar. I am already looking into a new collar which is crazy after we spent $60-70 on this one."

"Well, we thought we had a FANTASTIC product, but unfortunately, our lab mix finally became immune to it. He barks as soon as he's outside for 2 minutes - MAJOR seperation anxiety. Even after batteries were replaced, it was working properly, and he smelled strongly like citronella, unfortunately, he didn't care anymore. It looks like we're going to have to go to a shock collar :(. I would have rated it 3 paws because I know it did work, and if our dog wasn't so stubborn, it definitely would have been a life saver, but I don't like how quickly it wore through batteries - so 2 paws is the most I could give it."

"I have three dogs. My maltese and mini schnauzer are the barkers. The german shephard just looks at them with wonder. We bought two collars for the little dogs. First, it would take about four to five barks before the spray would release. By that point our dogs had no idea what the cause of the spray was. Also, for small dogs it is very difficult to fit properly around their necks. Thankfully, Petco allowed us to return the collars so no harm. =)"

"I purchased a pair of these for my yorkies in March 2008. They worked very well for about 2-3 months and stopped functioning completely. At first I thought it was the batteries but new ones didn't help.
I contacted Premier Pet Products and explained my situation. They were responsive and I sent my collars in and they replaced with refurbished collars. Well 2 months later the same thing happened. I emailed Premier again and they didn't respond at all, 2 more refurbs just showed up. Same story. 2 months later they are dead.
That is 6 collars in 7 months. I don't understand why these are on the market if I can't even get one that works."

Didn't work for me

"The bark collar functions as advertised but didn't work for my Miniature Pincher, probably because his bark it high pitched and the microphone didn't pick it up. I tested it by blowing in the mic like the instructions said. I tried loosening the collar, tightening the collar, made sure it was loaded with spray, and has a new battery installed. It sprayed one time out of approx. 20 barks. It might work for a bigger dog with a lower pitched or louder bark. He is an old dog so a shock collar is out of the question."

Only worked for a while...

"When i first tested it out by blowing in the microphone, it worked and sprayed a powerful mist of lemon smelling citronella. I put it on my dog but there was nothing that really sparked his barking so i took it off for a while and turned it off, and when i blew on it to make sure it was off it still sprayed(?). I fooled around with it and it would not turn off! Maybe an hour later after i left it alone it stopped, but i went to turn it back on and it would not work anymore. I nearly ran out of breath trying to blow in it to see if it would work, put more citronella, even checking if the battery was in right. I finally gave up. If you feel like taking a chance, try it out for yourself, but don't get your hopes up."

"I think my dog was too smart for this collar. She figured out that it didn't really do much. She didn't like the smell and it worked for about two days. Then she just realized that she could bark through the collar and get what she wanted that way."

"I was hesitant to buy this product as my cocker spaniel didn't have a barking problem but a howling problem and I was unsure of whether the collar was specific to barking. It's been about 2 weeks since I started using the collar and there has been a huge difference in the number of instances when the dog howls (usually to say she doesn't want to be left alone). Most times I do not hear her howl at all; however, just the other day I was in the house and heard her begin to howl in the yard... soft at first and then working up to a full hissy fit. The full on howl only lasted a few seconds before she just stopped and didn't start again (I assume because the collar was activated). I had my doubts because she's been behaving this way for a good eight years, but I highly recommend this collar, it has been a great solution to her separation howling and I didn't need to shock her or drug her!"

"I like the sensitivity level of this device. My dog doesn't mind wearing it, but it has reduced her barking to a minimum. A few sprays and she is much better. It is tricky figuring when to refill it (not knowing how many times she may have been sprayed) and getting the hang of when to turn it on or off have taken a few days to work out the logistics. The first one I bought did not work, but Petco replaced it with a working model right away with no hassel and the second one works as it should."

"We felt really bad getting this for our little buddy (5 year beagle). He is such a nice guy but we moved into an apartment after living in a house for several years and he would get too excited to see his neighbors at all hours of the day and night and start barking like crazy. To keep the peace with our new neighbors and to make sure we didn’t get a noise violation notice we took the plunge and purchased this collar. We also purchased a traditional shock collar but never tried it because this one worked so well. I can tell you it was quite an event the first time the spray discharged; however, it has worked like a champ thus far. No more barking buddy. We are going on day three. I was really surprised that it worked so fast. Our little buddy has hardly said a word and I can tell you he was very vocal and opinionated (we sort of miss hearing his opinion). We only make him wear the collar when we go for walks and when he is left along while we are gone. He doesn’t bark inside not even when he is playing with his little brother anymore. He has also become much better behaved on walks. I just order another for our one year old beagle. He was not very vocal dog until he noticed his brother talking to everyone in the complex. I think he feels he needs to speak for them both now. –highly recommended!!!"

"The Gentle Spray Bark Control Training System has been very effective. Our lab has been a persistent barker for 10 years. With the collar on she doesn't wake up the whole neighborhood. I'm sure they're thankful for that. Poor baby, though, when our other dogs bark she still gets sprayed. Doesn't hardly seem fair."

"My husband and I have a 1 year-old Miniature Dachshund. He's 10 pounds, but barks like he's 40 (big and volumnous!)
We reviewed several products before settling on the spray (mostly because I am opposed to shock treatments as training methods.)
We purchased our first collar and it would inconsistently spray when he barked. I exchanged it for the exact same one and this one sprays every time. We follow the spray (once the dog is quiet) with a "good quiet!" and a treat so to reinforce the positive, quiet behavior and associate barking with being negative.
Within 3 days of getting the second collar, the dog is responding to the "good quiet" command and is much less vocal (which is definitely a good thing!) No more mixed signals like the first collar; he gets a consistent, "Barking is bad" and "Quiet is rewarded" message.
On a side note, we send our dog to daycare one to two days per week and I was glad to see our daycare uses this same collar on some of their more "vocal" clients (dogs, not owners.) They, too, do not use shock/stimulus-related treatments, so I felt good about using this collar in our home."

"Hx: recently moved after 9 years in one place. After consulting with animal behaviorist, it was determined that my chi/dachshund/spaniel X was nuisance barking due to boredom. I implemented suggestions such as changing her food (no fillers), providing her with more mental stimulation such as food puzles and more exercise, in addition to other training of my own. These changes decreased the barking from 2 hours to 1 hour. However, this was still not acceptable to my neighbors. After speaking with a trainer, it was advised that I try the Gentle Spray Citronella collar. According to her clients and other trainers, it was more effective than the ulatrasonic devices. Apparently, the sound and scent combined is enough to get the dog's attention. I desensitized her to the collar over several days before actually turning the device on without me being there, under the advice of the trainer. I didn't want her to make a negative association to the collar, so I placed the collar (but not on) when she was playing, walking, etc. I only wanted her to make the connection that when the collar is on and I leave, she is not allowed to bark. It has been a month now and she has responded extremely well to the collar. No more barking! I personally think her barking was partially due to a very mild case of separation anxiety (no destruction). I would not recommend this collar for dogs who suffer from true separation anxiety, as it indicates in the directions."

"I have had this product for over a year. My Border Collie is an excessive barker. Once the collar is on, it stops completely. Batteries are easily found at Best Buy and I find if you are consistent with training, you don't have to replace the citronella that often."
