Wild wrens LOVE these!
Date: April 10, 2008
"I got several of these at a fantastic PETCO sale price. (But the regular price is still a super deal.) I have a small yard with lots of hanging ferns and begonias and such. The little wrens seem to love to nest in my hanging baskets and so sometimes I end up losing the flowers because I don't want to water their nests. I got these to try and they've attracted several families of saucy little wrens. If you've priced the "wild bird" houses, you know that this is a much better price and I made these a little more weather proof by painting them the same color as the trim on my house. After I painted them, I put a bead of silicone sealant along the top where the "lid" meets the house. The silicone is not toxic and it peels right off to clean out the house if you like (but wrens will clean it out each spring and then rebuild their nest with the same materials they threw out, days before...) I put a screw on each side of the house and connected a wire to them like a handle so I can hang them. I put two on shepherd's hook plant hangers and another one I just screwed to the house up under the eaves. So far, the favored spot is the one up under the eaves (where the hanging baskets are too.) I just can't get over what a great deal these are for wild birds and watching the nesting and feeding and fledging activities is great fun! I'm sure they're also perfect for nesting finches, but I've only bred psittacines. These are well made for their purpose and a great price."
