Necessary Evil, I'm Afraid
Date: September 20, 2009
"This item gets a 3/5 not because of the one I received, but on the whole, it is very unfortunate that the Eclipse hood does not stand the test of time and must be replaced. The replacement worked perfectly, but the simple fact is that the original hood will deteriorate after only 5-6 years of use. That may be fine for some people, but I believe that under normal wear, an item should last much longer. The plastic components (all of them) in this hood will begin to get brittle and crack after a time. I guess they didn't expect people to maintain an aquarium more then 5-6 years? If you haven't made a purchase for an aquarium hood, I urge you to reconsider this one. True, it works like a champ, but ultimately will fall apart. I only ordered one because I had the complete tank setup, and am way too lazy to shop around for something new to fit the odd sized tank. (I like the bio-wheel setups also). I'm hoping the replacement is constructed of better stuff. Only time will tell there. So, To sum it up: The website gets 5/5 paws for sure, this product: only 3/5. It will work great, then fall apart after 5-6 years of normal use."

Causes water leakage
Date: August 7, 2009
"I agree with the previous reviewer. I have had this unit for a few years. Until I read that review, I could not figure out why water was coming out of the top rear of the tank. It can be a significant amount of water in a short period of time when you don't see it coming, so it causes water damage on the floor & tank stand and water loss to the tank.
That being said, there are pros as well. It looks neat & clean, and its easy to use. Filter is accessible, biowheel is great, my light also works perfectly and always has. It does a good job of keeping the water clear also. The leakage problem is severe enough, however, that I wouldn't purchase this unit again."

Attractive Appearance
Date: May 30, 2009
"Let me start off with the fact that the overall appearance and clean design is the main feature that sold me on this system. I purchased the Eclipse 3. I did some research before actually deciding on the Eclipse System.
One problematic area that was not mentioned by many of the reviewers is the fact that the filtration section in the top of the lid is so close to the top that the tank water can spill over/leak over the top/back lip of the hood and down the backside of the tank. The few who did mention it said the leakage happens if the filter medium is not regularly changed. That is not the only thing that can cause it. Spill-over can also happen if any amount of quality filter floss is used to filter out micro particles or if the flow of water is impeded by the most minimal amount of diatom or algae buildup sucked through the filtration system. Unfortunately, the design of the Eclipse system's mechanical filter has inherent flaws. There is simply no way to add basic materials to polish the water, let alone filter out an algae or bacterial bloom without losing a significant amount of water out the backside of the hood. Spending extra money on sterilizers or canisters becomes a necessity to clean the water beyond the bare minimum.
I do like the light system until I have to do any major cleaning in the tank... then I curse the light set up to the enth degree. The overall design has good features and not so good features."
