"We just rescued a juvenile male cat. I have never had a cat but went to the pet store and bought this based on reviews. I was so worried about him scratching up my leather couch!
The instructions said it may take a while for your cat to get used to this post. The second I sprinkled the cat nip on the scatching post, he went to town, scratching and rubbing himself all over it.
This was such a cheap easy suggestion. To date he has not scratched on anything except his new post.

"After purchasing two other scratching posts (carpet and sisal), my cat was still scratching my furniture. I finally bought one more scratcher - the Cosmic Catnip Alpine Scratcher - which happened to be much cheaper than the others - and it did the trick! Kitty took to this immediately! After almost three years and two moves, this cardboard scratcher is still holding up. My kitty also loves the carpet mouse that comes on the inside. I would recommend this product to anyone. This is such a furniture saver that I have purchased two others for friends with cats."

"Our kitty has grown to a beautiful momcat, and right now is so exhausted from taking care of her kittens she seems to have gone off all her toys. The Kittens are enjoying playing with them all, and Momma is happy to let them, but when the first little guy discovered Alpine Scratcher she dropped everything and went over to him to explain that while he could play with everything else as much as he wanted that scratcher was hers.
After a few days and a few more discoveries (there's five babies) she has given in and lets them scratch on it, but she watches them carefully. She still uses it all the time, and it has lasted A LOT longer than I expected it too...we finally had to flip it to the fresh side after about 3 months Even after her daily abuse of the the thing. we will probably need to buy a new one soon, especially after the kittens get big enough to actually make a dent in it.
I highly reccomend this, she hasn't scratched any furniture since she got it and other scratching toys she has, she ignores completely in favour of this. I would say that if your cat is showing Mouser tendencies a ground level scratcher would be best, This cat is not a birder and never has noticed yet the door hanger carpet one.
The other thing is she seems to have a problem getting stuck on things with looped fibers (carpeted cat furniture, upholstery, t-shirts etc, she walked around the house with a wash cloth stuck to her foot for five minutes before she came into view of a helpful friend), she can't seem to remember to retract her claws and she starts to panic and needs rescueing. this scratcher is excellent for her cause she can scratch all she wants or needs and NEVER gets caught, there is nothing for her to get caught on."

"We literally just got home with our scratcher, and I am so glad that I trusted these reviews. After failed attempts to get kitty to scratch anything other than our best suede chair, we were willing to try pretty much anything.
As soon as we showed the scratcher to her, and even before we got it unwrapped, she was all over it and obsessed. When we set it down and sprinkled on the catnip, she started licking, rubbing, and, THANK GOD, scratching the thing. We've been home for about 20 minutes now, and we have great hopes for a happier kitty and a longer lifespan for our furniture after this."

"I first seen this product at a friends house in 2003, since then my two cats have enjoyed scrathing there little hearts out. They love this product. Just last year I had to put one cat down :( but still the other one runs to it claws his heart out and loves when I have more catnip to product."

"I and several of my cat-owning friends have this scratcher! The cats LOVE it.. My cat has never once tried to scratch the furniture, carpet, woodwork, or anything else in my house since we purchased this scratcher. She'll actually lay on it sometimes as well. "My 12 year old cat loves this cat scratcher -- every morning she wakes up, walks over to it, gets her morning scratching in, lays down next to it and goes to sleep. Even though she scratches it daily, it is very durable and has held up very well! Great product!"

"I have all kinds of scratch pads, inclines, and posts for my kitties all over the house. I wanted to replace an inclining cardboard scratchpad, and this looked very close to the one I had (which they don't make replacements for). This one is not well made. The cardboard is too narrow for the box itself, leaving gaps on either side of which I fear my kitties paws will fall through. Plus, it is not sturdy. I can see how easily it topples over. I returned it and will look for one that is better made."

"I still haven't seen my cat claw her little heart out on this item but I am hoping she will soon get the hang of it. I put it next to the area of the wall she was scratching. Guess I'll have to put some more catnip on the ramp to entice her. I think she will eventually start scratching but because she is so finicky, it will just take time. It looks like a good idea to have cardboard. The toy inside did attract one of my cats which is good. Shipping was very fast."

"What a chair and ottoman saver this cheap little number is. My kitty absolutely loves it and scratches on it all day everyday. I sprinkled catnip like they suggest but I didn't need it. she loves the fact she can jump up on it and stretch and scratch.
Unfortunately the other kitty doesn't seem to like cardboard so i bought her a corner scratcher made of carpet and a small sisal rug mat so she can scratch.
I would highly recommend this product and if your kitty happens to be one of the few that isn't drawn to it, you're only out $8."

"When I laid this down my cat was more interested in the toy. I Then started to place it in front of the couch where she scratches. It took her 3 days before she started to use it. The problem with this product is if you have a big cat it will move on them when they try to scratch. And it could be longer since cats like to Stretch out, That is why they like the couch so much they can stretch and it wont move on them no matter how much weight they put on it. She still tries to use it but I believe it has not fallen over on her yet, comes close. Once that happens a cat will probably never return to that product and it can join the cat scatchers graveyard I have going on. Overall this is a good product as it captures a cats attention I just think its made for a kitten rather than a full grown cat."
