About the sugar
Date: October 16, 2007
"Just a little tidbit about the sugar in these treats. Unrefined Brown Sugar, like in these, is the purest form of sugar and is really not bad for the animal. In this form its mainly to kill any bitterness that may result from any of the other ingredients. I doubt that it is for real sweetening. Just thought that might help with concerns"

"In responce to shaunaru's comments:
I just wanted to clarify that oats are actually an excellent grain for dogs. Rice in some forms is ok as well. Brown rice is the unpolished rice left over after the kernels have been removed. It isnt the best possable rice BUT it is not considered a filler and is much better quality than brewers rice.
You do hit the nail on the head with the sugar comment though. There is no reason to have it in the treat.
Finally, both Beef and Beef Meal are the #1 and #2 ingredients in these. While this is commonly known as splitting, Im quite confident that the beef level in these treats are high and easily out weigh any other ingredient. With that being said, it is one of Solid Gold's lower quality treats. I'd stick with the tiny tots. ;)"

Lost my trust
Date: August 20, 2006
"I
was so very disappointed in the Solid Gold Beef Jerky. Solid Gold is
one of my favorite and normally trusted companies for my Staffordshire
Bull Terrier with allergies. The name of this product implied that it
would be safe for my dog and I trusted that it was strips of dried
beef. However, that was not the case! Since when does sugar need to
added to a beef product to entice dogs to eat it? Never to my
knowledge. And if it's not needed to entice the dogs to eat it, then
why in the world would a company that encourages good nutrition want to
add sugar to a treat? And that's after molasses has been added. For my
dog, the brown rice, oats, and tapioca make this a forbidden treat. My
dog's final comment: "Where's the beef?"
