"Of all the aquarium filters I have had over the years, this is by far my favorite. It is incredibly quiet. You don't have to disconnect hoses or reprime in order to clean & replace filters--just pop the lever & remove the unit; everything else remains in place in the tank! Maybe not the cheapest in terms of replacing filter cartridges, but worth every penny."

"I had this filter for just 2 weeks and seems to be doing its job. Installation guide was well illustrated, only issue I had was to connect the hoses to the intake and output. Before putting the hoses, wipe oil, grease to make the tubes fit properly into the attachments.
Other than that I had no issues.

"the filter was very easy to set up. i have it on a 110 gallon. the tank has 5 large discus, 6 corys and 4 bristlenose plecos. it works great, but I'm finding i have to clean it every 2-3 weeks. once it needs to be cleaned it barely works.i've always had aquaclear filters, and they'll go for a few months between cleanings."

""I purchased the xp2. This canister filter system is without a doubt the best filter system that I have ever had. I have two aquariums, a 29 gallon and 75 gallon. I purchased the xp2 for my 75 gallon, however I am thinking seriously about buying one for the 29 gallon also. It is extremely easy to set-up and install. It is the easiest filter system to service on the market from what I have found. Once set-up, I only have to replace the carbon filter bag once a month and do a 10-25% water change and the water stays crystal clear. VERY VERY GOOD SYSTEM !! WELL WORTH EVERY DIME!! WILL SAVE TIME AND MONEY IN THE LONG RUN!!""

"I can't believe people think this is a good filter. My 55 gallon tank got cloudy and foul smelling in less then 24 hours. Never had that problem with the Fluval 304, which is still running after 6 years.......There are a couple features I DO like- the motor housing removes easily and the quick disconnect feature is a little easier than the 304. But overall NOT a good filter. Spend a little more and go for a Fluval."

"I just got my xp2 yesterday and so far I'm extremely happy with it. Setting it up wasn't too hard but attaching the tubes was almost impossible. They tell you to push them 2" onto the plastic but you pretty much need to be a body builder. Also, the xp2 didn't come with the biomedia, so I had to go to the petstore for those. I have this on my 20Gal tank with 2 turtles and fish. The water was crystal clear within minutes!"

"This week-end we installed the XP 1 on our 29 gal. tank. The hardest part was getting the hoses slid up the recommended 2" on the pipes. Finally used a little pet. jelly & that worked fine. We're on our 3rd day, so of course it should look great, but this filter is SO quiet, and the water is so crystal clear, I swear it looks like you could drink it! (No, I won't!!)
I'm seriously thinking about the XP2 for our 55 gal. at the office. I definitely recommend this filter."

"We have a water turtle and have been fustrated on how often the aquarium had to emptied and cleaned (every other week) this is with two filters! "This is my first canister filter and so far, I'm quite impressed. Fairly easy to set up, the filter media options are practically limitless, and it seems to be doing a great job. I'm using this with Rena's Smartheater and am really pleased with the results of both. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase this again or recommend it to others."

"I use 2 of these on my Oscar tank and couldn't be happier. My tank has 2 Oscars, 1 Jack Dempsey, 2 Clown Loaches, 1 Blood Parrot, 1 Pleco, and a medium sized catfish. As you can imagine the bio load is quite substantial but these filters are up to the task. Highly recomment them!"

"This is the best canister filter, especially for the price!!!! It is easy to clean! It has lots of room for media! It is silent! I have the rena xp3 on my 72 gallon bowfront goldfish tank, and it works great! Goldfish are very messy, and this filter doesn't have any problems keeping up. It leaves the water crystal clear. A+++++!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"When trying to decide on a canister filter for my 55-gallon aquarium, I saw a lot of conflicting reviews and information. I finally decided on the Rena Filstar XP2, and I couldn't be happier. It's reliable, it never makes a sound, and it has GREAT water-polishing capabilities, which is a MUST with my lime-laden water.
Even if I don't clean it as often as I should, the filter media does a wonderful job, and disassembly for maintenance is a breeze. It's the only thing I need to create current in my freshwater tank (although a saltwater would still require powerheads), and it has a very small footprint.
The only issue I experienced was a defective hose clamp out-of-the-box, so a few spares might be good to have on-hand. Other than that, the only complaint I can think of is that the Bio-Chem Stars were not included in the kit.
All in all, this is a GREAT filter with easy assembly and maintenance, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone seeking a canister."

"I own the XP3 and I've owned it about a month now. I'm using it on a 30 gallon tank that houses by my red eared slider turtle, but I will be using it on a 75 gallon tank in a few weeks when my turtle is moved to the new bigger tank. The filter works great, it keeps my water crystal clear, and keeps all the ammonia and nitrates out of the water. The filter runs very quietly, and I love that it has an enourmous amount of space to add different types of media in the baskets. Highly recommended!"

"I have one XP-3 on my 125 gallon tank. It does a great job of keeping the tank clean. The directions for setup and cleaning were easy to follow and I had it up and running in no time. It is so quiet I can not even hear it going. I love how I can pull the lever up and disconnect it from the hoses without spilling a drop. Cleaning it is a breeze. There is all kinds of different filter media options available for this filter and it comes with either a spray bar outlet or a jet nozzle. What more can you ask for?"

"I bought this because I have a discus 55 gal tank and needed great filtration. I previously had an aquaclear 150, which was pretty good but oh so loud. If you know anything about Discus, you know they say you have to do weekly water changes and keep water immaculate. Ever since I bought this filter, there is absolutely no sound coming from my tank, and I do a 75% water change every 3 to 4 weeks. It stays CRYSTAL clear, and my fish have been quite healthy for the past 8 months. I have the XP3, and I keep just the bio chem, the 4 filter pads, a basket full of stars/ceramic rings, and the micro pad. I clean out the filter once a month as well. I have 6 discus, 40 cardinal tetras, 12 corys, and 3 snails. This filter is amazing considering the load."
