"This thing is beautiful and very pleasant to look at. A sophisticated design and easy to clean.
I have had this product for about two months. We have two friends using it.
Petco was kind enough to assemble it for me, since I read comments about the halves not fitting. They fit fine.
I also read comments about the clip areas breaking and find no way that can happen (there really are no clips. The parts are solid and part of the form), but then I have been careful not to force anything (you line up the top [hood] with the bottom [pan] and then gently press the front and back of the clip area over the bottom area). The hood goes over and you press the front and back of that area. You will hear a click and you can test by trying to lift front, or back of hood up, but it should be snug and you can lift it by the handle to place as needed. Be patient and play with a bit and try moving it gently getting use to doing it. It slides over and down in a couple of motions. I am also cautious lifting the product filled trying not to cause the handle ends to break (not saying they would), since it is an attached part.
Note: 1. We place it in the bathroom by a tub on one side and wall on another. I was rushed after cleaning litter and placed it with the opening AGAINST the tub and our guys were stuck for some hours. I usually notice the vents for the filter (I think it is unnecessary) are toward the back, but didn’t this time. So double check before leaving area.
2. If your friends decide to wipe their paws against the inside of the hood (a very annoying sound), they may be telling you they don’t want to touch the litter. In my case they were smarter than us because the litter had grain beetles in it (litter tossed and new product gotten and filter placed in freezer overnight).
3. BIG issue for me was height of entrance into pan from floor to where top of pan meets bottom of hood. Some of these things have 9” entryways and must be for coon cats. This is about 6 ½” and perfect. The company was kind enough to take one and measure it for me. Nice people answering other questions too. I did my research (and reviews like this are a fantastic part of such research) and this is a great product and I did not want to have to return it and/or select something else.
4. Some vendors ask you buy all the colors available and return the ones you don’t want. That means extra shipping and carfare to store (so call first and get color wanted from store). Also not all vendors sell them with the front entrance door flap. The company will send one to you free if you want it. How much litter can get out that this piece of plastic will keep in AND do you really want them to go through that every time they need to use this? They may NOT want it there, but I guess you find out if you make them try it (I would get them use to new product first before trying the door, or remove it if there and try it later. This way you know they WILL use it in the first place and it isn’t the door that may stop them)."

"I have had this litterbox for a year now. It works great! My cat is 1yr. old now and loves it. It may take up some room but it will grow with your cat. The only problem that I have had is the hooks that hold the flap on the door have broken. My sister has the same litterbox for her cat. Her order didn't include the flap for the door for some reason?! Another thing i don't like is the top is easy to break. The plastic is thin. The scooper handle when you scoop the litter has an arch shape and catches excess litter in it...can be annoying."

"I had one of the self-cleaning litter boxes and it kept breaking down and stopped working, so I took it back to the store and bought this one just to hold me off till I found another one, but it works pretty good! It is tall enough for my older cats and cleans up very easy, the litter doesn't get all o0ver the floor as much as other litter boxes I have used."

"When I first saw this litter pan, I liked the idea but hated how big and bulky this set-up looked. I bought a booda dome instead. Anyhoo, my cats now have this litter box. They have plenty of room to move about, the odors stay in and the scoop holder really is brilliant. I would recommend this pan to everyone."

"My cat Sparky was using a smaller more standard litter box and he is a little larger than most cats so I went shopping for a new larger box and came across this online, 2 years later the box is still working out great for us. It holds a ton of litter and is ideal for 2 cats because with my 1 cat it takes him a while to fill it up....typically I scoop out the mess every 5 days. It does use the jumbo bags, usually any brand works well. The only problem that I have had with it is the door on the front recently broke (one of the hooks that holds it on broke off) but it was an easy fix with some twisty ties it was as good as new. I highly recommend this litter box it has been very good for Sparky and me for 2 years."

"Both the hooded and hood-free Petmate designer series boxes are well-made and considerably cheaper than many of the alternatives available in the pet superstores.
I was pleased with this box, apart from the fact that (as others have mentioned), the lid doesn't really seem to lock into place quite as tightly as I'd like. It's not a big deal, but the cats have managed to knock it off a couple of times, making a bit of a mess in the process. (To the box's credit, my cats are large, somewhat messy to begin with, and derive considerable enjoyment from taking things apart.. so this might not be much of an issue for other users.) Cleanliness-wise, the box is large, deep, and does a good job of containing the litter. For owners whose cats aren't particularly good about squatting when they do their business, urine may collect at the back of the box where the lid and bottom meet, but this is easily cleaned, and seems to be an issue with most of the covered boxes I've encountered. Overall, I'm satisfied, and so are the cats.
For those whose cats might be put off by the use of a covered box, I wholeheartedly recommend the cover-free version of this box. I don't see it listed on this site, but our local Petcos all carry them. The box is large, deep, and has an extra detatchable plastic lip around the rim to deter 'overshooting' and messes from overzealous diggers. I have a large (19 lb.) cat who dislikes covered boxes, but has a tendency to "miss" or get carried away and kick half the litter outside of the box. This is the first cover-free box I've used where I haven't had to worry about that. (I was so enthralled, I immediately went out and bought two more!)"

Great for a small apartment

"My apartment is pretty small. My bathroom is tiny and I don't have a laundry room, so I have to keep this kind of out in the open. It hasn't been a problem so far. The cover keeps the smell in really well, the tray is nice and deep, and my kitty loves the privacy. If you have a small place like me, I'd definitely recommend this litter box. It's handy to have the scoop on the side as well"

"I have 4 cats and 3 of these boxes and I am buying another one due to fussiness of one of my cats. 3 are large cats and 1 is small. I do recommend the Deluxe models as it gives a great amount of room inside. They love the privacy and so do I. Best liter boxes to date. Tried the automatic and they were terrible.

"I had my previous litter pan for 9 years with no problems. This litter pan I've had for 2 months and the plastic has cracked and the lid doesn't latch any longer. Terrible quality and I've writted to Petmate as well to complain. For the cost of the pan and the special liners you have to buy, I was expecting something much more durable."

"MY WIFE AND I PURCHASED THE PETMATE DESIGNER DELUXE LITTER BOX FOR OUR 2 BENGAL CATS. ONE CAT IS 20 POUNDS AND THE OTHER IS 10 POUNDS AND WE ARE HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE PRODUCTS DESIGN. WHEN THE CATS URINATE, THE URINE GETS UNDER THE LID WHERE IT ATTACHES TO THE BOTTOM PART AND IT PUDDLES UP ON THE RIM. THE URINE LEAKS OUT ONTO THE MAT OR THE FLOOR. BOTH MY WIFE AND I HAVE CHECKED THE LID TO MAKE SURE IT WAS A TIGHT FIT AND IT WAS ON PROPERLY EACH TIME WE HAD A MESS ON THE FLOOR. WE HAVE HAD THE CATS FOR 10 YEARS AND THIS IS THE FIRST LITTLER BOX WHERE I HAVE HAD TO WORK SO HARD CLEANING UP THE FLOOR OR THE BOX AFTER EACH USE. WE ARE LOOKING TO REPLACE THE LITTER BOX."

"I bought two of these for the four cats I have. I have had them for approximately six months, and in that time the latches on the side do not latch anymore. My cats don't like how the lid tries to come off as they are trying their best to hide their mess. I would not recommend this litter box to anyone."
