"I put the 30”x16” Scat Mat on top of my 29 gallon aquarium to keep my two cats from jumping on top of it. It has worked like a charm!
My two cats are Maine Coone mixes and have a lot of fur on their paw pads. They didn't even seem to notice the mat when it was on the low setting. The medium setting seems to work well. I recommend using the lowest effective setting.
I saw one cat attempt to put his two front paws on top of the aquarium but the medium setting was enough to deter him from jumping completely on top of the aquarium. He recoiled one paw when he felt the static shock. He appeared more annoyed than anything else, and did not seem hurt at all. If he had felt hurt he would have ran away, but instead he sat there and stared at it, miffed at the injustice of being unable to do what he wanted to do. =) He stared at the mat as if contemplating whether or not he could win a 'battle of wills' with it, but he ultimately gave up and was content to watch the fish from the front of the aquarium. My other cat has showed zero interest in jumping on top of the aquarium since we started using the Scat Mat, so I’m sure she already had her own unpleasant encounter with the Scat Mat.
I highly recommend this product! I touched the pad myself and it felt like one of those annoying electrostatic shocks you get as you are getting out of your car. It doesn't hurt at all, and is more startling/annoying than anything else.
I was wary and skeptical of using the Scat Mat, especially since it was so expensive. I bought the Scat Mat when it was on sale and when Petco offered free shipping for orders over $65 (I bought a few ‘Da Bird’ replacement feathers to reach the $65 mark). I eventually decided to try the Scat Mat since I realized I could return it if it didn't work. (Keep the box and receipt for at least 1 month during your test trial.) I also realized that I pay about $10 for one roll of double sided tape. I have already spent well over $60 on tape over the past year in attempts to keep my cats off of counter tops and from scratching the couch. The Scat Mat is more discrete than unsightly tape and over the long-term is more cost effective.
Before trying the Scat Mat I placed double sided tape on top of the aquarium and on the nearby launch pad (kitchen counter top), but I wanted a more permanent solution. Tape eventually loses its stickiness and needs to be replaced to be effective over time. Also, having double sided tape over part of my kitchen counter top was not practical. The Scat Mat is a removable deterrent that I can leave on top of the aquarium and thus free up space on my nearby counter top. Of course I also tried using a water bottle to deter my cats from jumping on the aquarium, but we all know that method of behavioral modification is seriously flawed. =)
I’m glad I gave the Scat Mat a chance. I am *very* relieved to not worry about my cats breaking the top of my aquarium, especially when I’m not home! I’m even considering buying the long, Scat Mat Strip to keep my cats from scratching on other areas of the house."
