Ignored at first but he caught on and likes it-after nails trimmed.

I have cat that I took in off the street he's had to learn many house manners. You can tell he spent alot of time fending for himself. He probably was using trees for scratching. Since he's come inside he has preferred doorways, walls and the side of our bed. Since our bed was the major target I set up the cat tree in front of it spiked it with catnip and let him upstairs. At first he ignored it and still used the bed. He did not seem to like the texture of the sisal. I demonstrated how to use it with my own hands many times and tried to get him interested. Not much interest. He would touch it occasionally with his paws seemed turned off and walk away. I was sure I'd have to return it. I am not sure but I think what changed is that I trimmed his nails. This may seem counter intuitive but even a cat with trimmed nails scratches things. This cat constantly kneads/makes biscuits on us so we need them trimmed to avoid being a pin cushion. I think his nails were get caught in the sisal pad and he did not like that. Since his nails are trimmmed I think he is trying to "resharpen them". He also likes the praise he gets every time we see him using it. I feel this will be habit that will lock in with him. He is the only vertical scratcher in the house. The rest of the cats are horizontal scratchers and ignore the post.

Great scratching post! I read many reviews and went to the store to see it before making the purchase on-line. It has a nice height and very steady. I have one female adult cat, she took to it right away. It saved my carpet.:) Btw, for the interior design conscious, because it is natural/neutral in color, it easily fits to your decor.

The quality and stability of this scratcher is the best I have ever seen. It is very tall so the cats can really stretch, and it doesn't wobble. Also, it's very attractive. Be sure to have several different kinds of scratchers for your cat to choose from, especially this one!

I have two large Maine Coon cats that love to scratch. The one prefers large flat scratchers but the other preferred our bathroom doorway. He caused so much damage that my husband said we should have him declawed (which I am strongly against). I searched the internet and found the Smart Cat Ultimate Scratching Post. Romeo gets his full stretch while scratching and my bathroom doorway has been saved. Highly recommend this to anyone with cats large or small.

The best scratcher we've ever had!

This is hands down the best scratching post I've ever found and worth every penny!! It's taller than regular free standing posts, so the cats think it's a tree. The construction is sturdy and the materials great quality, plus it's not an eye sore to have in your house like some cat furniture. My cats only wish it were twice as tall!

Wonderfully sturdy! Even placed on our hardwood floor, it hardly moves when our 2 cats scratch, climb, and jump on top, whereas many scratchers will slide or wobble.
It's tall enough they can stretch out --and its more appealing than furniture.

It's tall and heavy - which is perfect for strong, big kitties that can knock over lesser scratching posts. The tight woven "fabric" around it is very durable and doesn't leave a bunch of little shredded bits of carpet or sisal like most scratchers do. Liked it so much, we bought two more (on sale! Bonus!)

My cat immediately started scratching right when I took it out of the box. It seems really sturdy and is a good product. The only thing i dont like is it seems like the rope is not super tight so the rope comes off the base a bit.

This scratching post is absolutely perfect! My cat loved to scratch at my carpeting, ottoman and $300 accent chair (I died a little every time I had to chase him away from that chair.) At first I had it in my living room, but noticed he wasn't using it. I realized I should put it right next to a piece of furniture he usually scratches, so I put it in my bedroom next to the ottoman. If your cat doesn't seem interested in it, placing it somewhere else might make a difference for you, too. I rubbed some catnip on it and it only took him a few hours to start using it. I haven't seen him scratch the carpeting, ottoman, accent chair or anything else other than the post since then. I just wish I'd bought it before he ruined my chair :(

Truly an "Ultimate" Scratching Post

Product arrived well packaged and in perfect condition. Nicely constructed. So simple to assemble, it was in place in minutes and looks like a rather attractive piece of "furniture". I like that it's minimalistic without garish colorations or baby kitty attachments--suits my adult cats and my taste. My largest and oldest male (7) shows off regularly and achieves an amazing and beautiful stretch, almost always reaching up to the top of the sisal part. My oldest girl (17) also uses the new post more than any previous scratching post they've had. The youngest two (5) aren't as active with it, but do use it. With the sale and free shipping, this was an excellent purchase that we'll all enjoy for a long time. Thank you Petco!

Scratching post was simple to assemble, looks exactly as pictured, and is very stable. Would definitely recommend. Was so happy with purchase, I bought a second one and had it delivered to our adult son for his cat.

Great alternative to the couch!

My cat came in as a stray and seemed to like scratching the couches more than her posts. I figured out that her other posts were not sturdy enough for her to stretch out on, as she was used to trees outside. This post has been very helpful to train her away from the couch and we both enjoy it!

Disappointed in THIS SmartCat Design.

We recently bought (2) of the SmartCat Peek-a-Prize Boxes and LOVED the durable, simple design & color (which blend it to the home & doesn't scream "I am a cat toy"!). We then immediately ordered the SmartCat Scratching Post as it's design looked just as smart.
We were quite disappointed to find upon receiving it that the bottom plate is in (2) separate sections though shown as "one" section on 2 sides of the box image.
Note: The separation lines are airbrushed out of advertised images - probably because it DOESN'T look as good. *And the way you must attach the post by screws this separation line must face the front - if you turn it around the "wrong" sides of the post show (as it has the scratching fabric connecting on the other 2 sides). It is a DESIGN FLAW - And the crack in the (2) bottom plates immediately collects dust & debris.
Conclusion: This SmartCat design isn't really that smart. If they had kept the bottom plate design in one piece AS SHOWN our review would've been different.
(The bottom plate is most probably in 2 pieces for shipping convenience - but airbrushing the image in this case is a really attune to false advertising). The post has been sent to the laundry room where it can't be seen.
The cat does love the tallness of the post as he can really stretch out while scratching. And how the design appears OR cleans up really doesn't matter to him!

I saw the Ultimate Scratching post in the store and then ordered it online due to the online price. This has been great for my Maine Coons who are too tall to use an ordinary post and instead went for the furniture. This post allows them to stretch up like they would if using a tree to scratch. Maggie loves to use it and likes to knock cat nip toys off the top. Thanks again.

My cats love this scratching post. It's our second one. We got the first one when they were kittens and in 2 years of use they shredded it! So we bought another one, and they love it! I wish it could be made so that the post itself could be taken apart easily, and a replacement "scratch surface" could be put on easily. It would save so you wouldn't have to discard the entire thing. It is well made enough to keep and just replace the part that gets shredded over time.

I couldn't find any scratching post that kept my cat away from the dining room chairs and sofa arms. She now scratches this post with great enthusiasm and even claws her way to the top of it. The height and sturdiness of this scratching post make it ideal for cats who like to reach up and stretch out when they scratch.

I have 2 large cats and most scratching posts are to short to allow them a good stretch while scratching. Both cats use this post frequently and leave my furniture alone.

If your cats like to really stretch up high when they scratch, this is the post to get. It's TALL and sturdy. Assembly was a snap, and our cats went nuts for it after we sprayed it with a little bit of catnip spray.

My two cats took to this post right away. I placed it near a window and they inspected it and then stretched on it, clawing on it happily. It is a very heavy strong post that won't topple over. Very good investment. No more scratching on the furniture.

It took a while for my cats to try this one out, but they are finally using it. The material is wrapped vertically on the post and not horizontally as I expected.
