The Soil is the key

"I have had this product twice. The first time I had one I had really nice “dirt” that it was installed in. The unit was able to retain the water long enough to digest quickly. This was in Florida and even the HOT summer did not smell. I recently moved and decided to get another unit. This one has not worked at all and I would say it has to do with the soil. I now live in an area where the soil is very sandy and fine. I will fill up the water level and it is gone in less then an hour. Even the rainy season didn’t help. The Doggie Dooley is now totally full of dog droppings and I can no longer use it. Also the “step-on” lid broke (a rivet popped) before I even finished the install. I have not been able to figure out any way for it to hold the water longer which would help."

"My soil is too fast, I guess. I would fill up the unit with water, and within minutes it was empty again. So I dug it up and planted a tree in the big gaping hole it left behind."

"My husband and I love this thing. We installed it in July and it's awesome! We have two dogs and you could never tell looking at our yard. They poo, we rake it up, and into the dooley. No more awful odor from bags baking in the garbage can sitting in the hot sun! The garbage men even noticed a difference. I'm sure the neighbors are happier, too. I constantly promote this system to other dog owners.
Yes, you do have to fill it up with water once a day, but it's a septic system. Of course they depend on water. Just be sure to install you system within range of a waterhose. We turn it on to fill when we let the dogs out in the morning. By the time the dogs are done, it's almost full. We just turn the water off, and put the hose up. We add enzymes weekly. We planted flowers around the lid to avoid running it over with the lawnmower. The flowers look fantastic and well fertilized. I have no complaints with this thing. It has saved us money on those bags."

"Assembly was fairly simple; I recommend a cordless drill over a screwdriver though. Digging the hole was the hardest part - the hole needs to be big and deep. The hole aside, the dooley is great! No more garbage cans full of poo (offending the neighbors and the poor garbage man). This really is a brilliant product and environmentally friendly too. I highly recommend this product!"

"This is a waste of money. Water drains right out, does not stay long enough to digest stools, product is made of cheap plastic, and is hard to keep square so lid will close when you install it. You can do a better job with a plastic 5 gallon paint bucket with holes drilled in the sides. SAVE YOUR MONEY!"

"I have had trouble with the drainage. I guess it drains too well. I have to add water more often, but I still love it. My biggest problem is that someone ran over the cover with a lawn mower and cracked it. I can't seem to find where to purchase another cover. Even the Doggie Dooley web site didn't have just the cover. By the way - PETCO is almost half the price that it is on the Doggie Dooley web site."

Great idea but drainage issues

"The idea of this is great but I had heaps of problem with drainage. Water would disappear within seconds of filling the hole. Must be the sandy Australian soil. I added pebbles and gravel as a base but within 10 minutes the water would still disappear and the unit is dry. I used the unit anyhow and everyday need to refill water. Not sure if this means the enzyme has gone as well and needs to be re added. I havent been readding the enzyme. The waste level seems to be raising so not sure if it is working. But if your soil and drainage works it is a easy and clean way for disposal."

"I really like this product. I made my boyfriend install it; he was not happy about digging the hole, but it turned out to not take as long as he thought. We had the unit for some time and it took us a while to get a free weekend to want to assemble it. But so far, so good. It seems to just disapear by adding water and the powder like they said it would. No smell either which is amazing!"

"What a great idea! I had not seen this before I saw it on the PetCo site. My Husband said his family had one years ago. We have one large Lab and it seems to work fine. I just add the waste. Draging water out to the hole has been a bit of a bummer. You may want to install this near a garden hose. We did not want it too close to the house in case there was a smell! But so far, no smell."

"I had one of these in my other house but did not want to move it - yuk! So I bought another as they really do work. I had one of the tank styles before and was surprised that I had to assemble this pyramid style. The 4 panels and a lid need to be screwed together. It took me a while, but I got it together and dug the hole. I would have to say if you have a dog, buy a dooley! Its really worth not having to save your poop for trash day."

"I bought this but did not realize it has no bottom! I wasn't sure how it was going to work, but so far it seems to work just fine. The dog poop kind of collects and just seems to turn into a stewy type of stuff. I keep adding it and it keeps going into the ground. I can't say as I have an smell coming from it. So overall, I would have to say I recommend it!"

"This little poop machine is great! I had one about 20 years ago, only it was the tank style.
This plastic panel one was a little more difficult as I had to assemble it, which took about half an hour. I had to drill out one of the holes myself, but the screw did most of the work.
This hole is pretty easy to dig. I remember the last one I needed a post hole digger and you had to dig really deep it seemed.
The plastic panels could be stronger but it seems to work just fine."

"This sounded like a neat idea. And it appears to really work.
The assembly was easy as I made my husband do it; but I had to dig the hole. Whew! In 90 degree heat I lost a couple of pounds.
We had to tweak it a bit to get it to be level with the ground. And the lid would not stay down at first - till I used a rock to hold it down.
But all in all I am so happy to just pitch it in and not stink up my trash!"

"A neighbor recommended this to me and I am glad he did. It had to be assembled which I did not realize until I opened the box.
It took me a little over an hour to put it together and dig a hole (wow, a deep hole). But it went in the ground just fine. And has worked well since I put it in.
No more "goodies" for my trash man. At least he will be happy.
I would recommend this for anyone who has a dog and a fenced in yard like me."
