Perfect for teddy bear hamster

This is perfect for my fat teddy hamster. I don't own a rat, but I imagine it would be too small. It's also great because you can add ledges for extra space & the bars aren't big enough for them to get through. Would not recommend for robo's or small hamsters though.

Not Suitable For Rats!

This cage is NOT suitable for rats daily living! This should be used as a temporary or travel cage ONLY.
Rats need at least 24"x24"x24" of space for daily living.

Unsuitable for a rat.

I got this as a starter cage when I impulsively bought a pet rat a few years ago. In the past few years that I've owned rats, I've learned a lot about them and this cage is just NOT big enough. Ideally, rats should be housed at least in pairs for their mental health and this does not allow room for two rats, let alone one. The ramp takes up a good deal of the little space and is unnecessary for the rat to reach the shelf (not to mention seriously flimsy and easily broken). This would only be good as a means to house a rat while you clan its much larger cage or for recovery from illness/surgery. On the positive side: I've had this cage for a few years and aside from the ramp breaking almost immediately, the cage itself has held up well. I like that it collapses for storage while I'm not using it.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great cage for one rat (Wouldn't try fitting more)

I've had this cage for about a week. I see nothing wrong with it, structure-wise at all, it's solid and inescapable and big enough for my one adult rat, Avie, but I probably wouldn't try to put two adults in there as I could see it getting a little crowded. Also, the food bowl it comes with is pretty frickin' big so you won't have to refill food much at all. And if your rat is anything like mine, who would constantly be tipping her food bowls over, it's stationary and locks into the second floor so she can't do that anymore, which is reaaaallly nice.
The only bad thing about it is that the stairs that clip on to the second floor sometimes just unclip themselves, but it's very easy to snap them back on.
Overall this cage is pretty nice. I'd recommend it.
