"I have two combinations of the SeaClear Tanks and Eclipse covers, a 30 Gal with Eclipse III, a 25 Gal tall with an Eclipse II, and right now I'm buying another Eclipse II for a 20 Gal SeaClear tank I just bought.
One thing I have to say right off the bat, if the intake tube is too long, all you need to do is get a large serrated kitchen knife (or whatever works) and cut it to size. Very easy. You don't need to call Marineland to get another one?!!
I can't say enough about these tank combos. They are totally gorgeous. I always get some algae right after the tanks cycle (b/c I overfeed my fish), but it usually goes away in a few weeks. I have one in a bright room, but not close to the windows, no probs. I have one right next to the window, it gets direct light, no probs.
Another thing is, these lights are totally adequate for a wide variety of plants. From everything I read, aquariums need lots of light for plant growth, and the wattage included in the Eclipses would not be enough. Not true. In fact, I changed the bulb on my Eclipse III to a 64 watt retro fit kit, and my algae problems didn't go away until I put the original light back on. I filtered the algae away using an HOT Magnum with a Micron cartridge and diatom powder. Anyway, my plants are gorgeous. People can't believe the way my aqauriums look. I DO use Eco-Complete Freshwater Plant Substrate under my gravel, and I know that helps a lot, b/c I assume that the plants outcomplete the algae. I don't do anything fancy, no CO2 system or anything. No fertilizer.
I had one glass tank (which I got rid of) and it really didn't have the same clarity as the acrylic. Also, I have the Marineland 12 and 6 gallon systems, and the acrylic seems more prone to scratching than the SeaClear tanks. They also have the same great lighting and filtration system.
The Eclipse systems are wonderful. I can take out the filter and clean it without dismantling the whole system. I clean the removable filter about twice a week under warm running water, and change it once every two weeks. I rinse the biowheel in aquarium water that's being changed once in a while. I clean the whole filter system in my heavily stocked tanks about once every 3-4 months, and in my lightly stocked aquariums, they never seem to get too dirty. Also, because the intake tube doesn't have large holes, my guppy babies don't get sucked into the filter, as they did in another filter.
I tried setting up a glass 10 gallon tank with another type of filter system, w/o the Eco-Complete, and I had intractable pea green water in a couple of months, even though I had a fair number of plants in this aquarium too."
