"I got this cage for my very first hamster, Scooter. He absolutely loves it, and so do I. I was a little nervous about buying it because of some of the other reviews, but I do not regret the decision at all. My hamster loves the petting zone, and spends most of his time there. However, he does enjoy his tubes and the wheel also. It is not hard to clean, contrary to the other reviews. The thing I really like about this cage is that it is very easy to see through, which allows you to check up on your hamster or just sit and watch him/her for entertainment. I would highly recommend this cage to anyone considering it, and would definately buy it again!"

"Okay, I was worried about this cage from all the reviews, but since all cages we looked at had some problems, we went ahead and bought the CritterTrail 2. It was a little tricky to put together, but we figured it out and the one shelf we decided to use fit just fine. We also bought a second little CritterTrail cage and connected the two using the expansion tube pack. We even bought a little sky loft for the second cage. Everything has been fine. Our blackbear hamster loves her cage. She uses the wheel, she sleeps in the loft. We did get her the CritterTrail bottle with the little ball in it before we even left the store so we avoided the whole water bottle problem.
We have had this cage a week and our hamster hasn't escaped. We will be cleaning it this today for the first time, but I don't plan on taking the whole thing apart. She doesn't even "go" in the main room so a little pulling out of the litter and putting some back through the door is all that we will do there. The dirtiest place is up in the loft where she sleeps, "goes", and stores food, yuck! We will clean that area by wiping it with hot water on a paper towel. I am not sure why people feel compelled to completely tear apart their cages. But, reading how other people have had parts break when they did that, we will not be tearing our cage apart.
We like this cage. It is colorful to look at, compact, expandable, and we can see our little "Black Pearl" everywhere she goes in the cage. We try not to open the sky loft both out of respect for her bedroom and because other reviewers said the plastic latch broke on theirs. But we haven't needed to because in one week she is already trained to come out the front door. We give her a treat every time she comes out so she knows the sound of the cage door opening and comes running. I would recommend this for any first time hamster owner.""

"This cage was very bulky, and my hamster chewed up the wire. The little dome on the roof that opens up had to be taped down because Firefly (my Russian Dwarf) could push it open, and she had fallen multiple times! I even had to wire the little trap doors on the front shut because the hamster would climb on them until the opened. There wasn't a lot of room for anything else in the cage because of all the junk already stuffed in there. Also (am I boring you?) this cage is VERY hard to clean, since you have to disassemble then reassemble it. It was very nice looking, yes, but I wouldn't recomend it."

"I used to have a Siberian Dwarf hamster named Matthew. I was a first-timer when i got this cage with my dad. This is a great cage. But I think it is better for younger hamsters because the tubes go really high and it takes a lot of effort to get up there for a hamster. The petting area is great and portable! I used it when I had to clean the cage. The water leaked a lot so I had to constantly wipe the ground. The wheel is a little noisy, but I didn't mind. Other than that it is very roomy for a hamster but a dwarf hamster. Great cage for first-timers!"

"I used this cage for my first Campbell's dwarf hamster. It is a bit of a hassle to put it together and take it apart for weekly cleanings. However it does offer a good amount of space and my hamster always seemed to love it. Crittertrail cages are also infinitely expandable so with a few extras this cage could be ideal."

Plastic parts tend to crack

"The cage looked pretty, but within the first month, the petting zone hinge broke, and I had to replace it twice (cheap plastic). Then the side panels that connect the tubes snapped (again, cheap plastic), and when I dropped the shallow base, it split in half!!! My point is, the material is brittle. Also, the water bottle has no metal ball, so it dripped like crazy.
My hamster loved the petting zone, but it got kinda smelly, even with weekly cleaning. Overall, it did not hold up. I would not have bought this cage, had I known. We're now looking for a new cage, preferably one that holds up."

"My gerbils love the Critter trail two, it gives them all they want. They love the hide away petting station. The only problem is that if they have nothing to chew they will nibble the tunnels. They like the multiple levels of the home but they do jump from level to level sometimes. The wheel is not to squeaky for me but there are some things I do to help. I fthe wheel squeaks olive oil fixes it and they like the smeell. Overall the habitat is a good investment. Theyseem to be very happy with their cage. Even when they do chew the cage it can be fised pretty easily with a nail file to keep edges smooth. I like the cage because it is easy to clean and is very hard for them to escape from. One of the problems with the toy is the water bottle that comes with it. They can't drink from it very easily so I bought them a new one that has a spout that goes inside the cage. Other than that the cage is a great investment and is very helpful for first time gerbil owners."

"we have had this cage for a week and its a piece of junk. when trying to put the cage together, none of the pieces lined up. we are trying to clean it and put it back together and it wont go back together. the water bottle leaks. the two shelves don't fit the metal cage and fall every day because they don't fit. they just aren't long enough. the wheel if fine and so far she hasnt chewed on anything yet. it looks cool but buy a habitrail instead. they are a lot better made and won't tick you off putting it together. hopefully they will take the cage back at and us exchance it for something better"

"I got this for my Syrian hamster because I have always wanted a cage with tubes for previous hamsters. I like, but not love, this cage. At first, it was hard to assemble, but after that I had no problems taking it apart and cleaning it.
I removed the wheel, because it was clunky and left no room for the hamster. I had to find alternative means for exercise (separate hamster ball). She has NO PROBLEMS maneuvering through tunnels and she is A FAT ONE!
She chewed up the plastic platforms, but they held up. It took a while, but she made the overhead petting area her home."

"The wheel is noisy and we replaced it with one that attaches to the outside of the cage. The hamsters do NOT use the tubes to climb up to the red "shelves". They climb up the side of the cage, instead. We took one of the shelves out, altogether, as it is just wasted space that they do not use. We keep the other one in only because of the water bottle. We will probably end up buying a plug to fill in the hole where the water bottle goes, and purchase a water bottle that hangs on the side of the cage. Also, because the "nesting area" on top is so small, it does not get enough air circulation, and though the hamsters use it quite a bit, it smells bad, even with regular cleaning. The cage is not easy to clean because it it difficult to put back together."

Better for Dwarf Hamsters -Not Syrians

"My 8 month old female Syrian hamster HATED it. She is very active and felt claustrophobic in it, due to her size. She chewed all edges of BOTH the comfort levels until they came off (I had to use superglue to secure them back on). She tried to escape out of the petting zone (I had to tape a small portion of it to keep the latch from coming loose). After a month, the exercise wheel got noisy, so I bought another kind of silent wheel (I recommend the Super Pet Silent Spinner in 6.5" diameter bc it can be used without the base. Just attach it to the inside of the Critter Trail Two cage. It is silent and durable). My Nibbles is now in a 10 gal. aquarium with a 2nd level wire add-on top, so now she has levels to climb, and I bought another Super Pet Silent wheel and a rectangle hide out hut. She has been happy ever since. I have come to learn she likes her time out of her cage, so I let her roam my 8' x 7' screened in Lanai (supervised, of course) for 20 mins. and at 10 months old, she's happy). Hope this helps!!"

"I only have one hamster but he loved all the space. he would run up and down the tubes and it was so funny to watch him. the only thing i didnt like was that he had to up the tube to get to his water. But over all its a great!"

"Our little dwarf hamster loves this cage and spends lots of time (at night) in her wheel. The wheel is made of two interlocking pieces and is quite noisy, but over all we love it. I can't imagine having 4 regular size hamsters as the picture suggests, sounds kind of crowded. But we will add a friend for Gertrude shortly!"

"I ordered this (online - price was much better!) for the new baby dwarf hamster (adopted from Petco store). The hamster really seems happy and there is a lot of room for it to explore. If I were a hamster, I would like this as a home. The multiple levels and numerous tubes seem to be a lot of fun for the little critter. Also, the bedding doesn't get pushed out of the habitat."
