I bought this so our cats would stop scratching our new rug. Despite the fact that they have a scratch board, they still continue to tear apart the couch and rug even right after spraying it.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Ive had an old couch for several years that I had no particular love for. It was functional but made of old material that resembled tightly woven yarn. My cat didn't claw anything but the sides of it - and it never showed much wear from years of cat abuse.
Fast forward to when I move into a new home, and naturally I trashed the old couch, and bought a new one. It didn't occur to me that kitty would think it was still okay to go after the new couch. With microfiber sides - it was a disaster waiting to happen. Sure enough, not ten minutes after it was delivered, there was kitty, stretching his claws and marking his territory.
Kitty isn't scared of water bottles. He climbs in the bath any chance he gets! So I went to Petco, and after reading reviews on several products decided to give this anti-scatch spray stuff a try. Kitty has only touched the couch once since then, and quickly seemed to change his mind and never went after it again! To make sure he'd stay away, I went out and got a cat scratcher for him. Now kitty is happy with his new scratcher, and so am I on my nice new couch.
I spray the couch once a aweek, and it, coupled with the new avenue for his scratching needs, I no longer have issues with scratching. It may survive a few years yet!
I recommend this product - but I can understand that it may not work for some. My kitty has never before encountered anti-scratch sprays as I never used them until now. A cat who is used to scratch sprays, may not be so easily dettered.
Good luck!

My kid's new cat destroyed her grandpa's prize couch, practically triggering an eviction ! (not really ... but closer than the benevolent grandfather has ever come since offering us refuge here a few years ago)
Fortunately, NM cat scratch deterrent spray WORKS! You have to apply to pretty much daily but (together with StickyPaws tape strips) it has worked to totally rebuff the cat. If you don't apply it everywhere on the couch the cat may scratch a new location; when this happens, I spray the spray right in front of the cat & he seems to get the message that the coach is going to have this (to him) horrible scent that neutralizes his smell glands in his paws. To a human, it smells great! Clove & orange oil l think. Because of this product, the cat & we get to stay in our happy home ...

I have two cats. One is an angle, one is a devil. The devil likes to scratch the carpet, chairs, pillows, mattress, etc. I have tried everything. The only thing that is effective is to squirt him with water while he's in the act. I was hoping this spray would be a deterrent, but it isn't. It works as good as the water bottle- I shake it at him and he runs. :-(
