Top of the line substrate

Eco Complete is a top of the line substrate that is ready out of the bag. I used Eco Complete in all my tanks. It's natural and great for planted aquariums. The substrate also doesn't have sharp edges and helps the health of cory cats. It's ready out of the bag and also comes with beneficial bacteria for the tank. Just pour bag contents into your tank and add water. Run normal filtration and your water will be clear in hours. The silt will settle within 24 hours.
Great Product and the price on petco is worth it with the free shipping and any other deals they got going on.

great looking gravel

Well its not really gravel, its substrate and it probably won't work with undergravel filters. Once in it has a natural looking dark color. Its absolutely great for growing plants, as long as you have enough light. I will not buy anything else for my aquariums. There is a little clouding of the water, which settles within 24 hours with filtration.

I don't normally write reviews, but as I am ready to buy this again, I decided to. All of my tanks are planted and this is the only substrate I use in over 8 tanks and two sumps. A great value and a great product.

I used 40lbs of this over 20 lbs of Miracle Gro Organic Choice and this substrate is amazing. It caps my soil and is fine enough to keep my Limnophila Aquatica rooted in place. HC works well in this substrate for me as well. No problems with floating plants. All of my plants are striving. I've had 5" of growth in 6 days with my Limnophila and Bacopa Monnieri plants. My HC is rooting beautifully and spreading with substrate.

Read alot of good reviews for this product so when I was ready to set up a 10 gal here in Fl. for the winter months I could not find it. With petcos price I went ahead and ordered and had within aweek. Poured the whole contents in the tank, filled with water and started filter. The next day I added afew plants and afew fish to cycle. After aweek I can see plant growth already. Love the black color with the reddish brown particles mixed in.

Doesn't cloud up the water. Doesn't have to be rinsed. Not messy. Too soon to say how well it works for plants.

I have to say I was dissapointed with this product. I feel like it did not deliver as promised . I found it a little light when planting in it, so even small fish can up root everything you put in it. But I guess my biggest complaint is when buying black substrate, you don't expect red flakes you get in this. I had to buy black gravel to cover it so I would get the effect I wanted. Next time, I'll just buy the black gravel.

excellent plant substrate

I always recommend this gravel for any planted tanks. Mind you, it's a little expensive, but it definitely works well with rooted plants that are nutrient hogs. This substrate is actually a mix of different sized gravels, some almost small enough to be sand, which is good since it makes things a little bit easier for roots to grow in. No need to wash, although you can. I like that it's completely black, which looks great, helps the tank inhabitants to look great, and avoids causing your fish's colors to fade from too much light relfecting into their eyes. This stuff has been termed a CEC, meaning it absorbs fertilizers and releases them when needed; very useful. The only way this stuff will promote algae growth is if algae grow directly on it. Hasn't happened for me, and I've been using it for years. Extremely recommended!!!

Awesome Substrate

I was recently starting a 10 gallon shrimp tank and needed a good substrate for plants. For less than $18, this stuff did the trick and my plants are GREEN! It's also very easy to plant even the most delicate of plants like micro sword because the pebbles are so fine.
When I dumped this into my tank, the water became extremely cloudy, but it does go away after about 5 hours if you have a good filter. Plus, the materials in this gravel are 100% organic, so it won't hurt your fish if you already have some in there.
Overall, I do recommend this substrate to anyone looking for healthy plant growth. One bag sufficiently covered my 10 gallon tank and you would probably need 2 bags if you have anything bigger than a 15 gallon.

I bought Eco Complete after deciding I wanted to try a my hand at a planted aquarium. I am very happy I bought this product. It looks beautiful and my plants are doing great. Absolutely no clouding or problems when putting in this substrate, I just dumped it into my tank and the substrate settled on the bottom nicely.

not only was this product shipped so fast , and on top of that , on sale, i was surprised at how good it looks in my aquarium. my fish seem to love their new "carpet". so far i have taken all but one of my plastic plants out of the aquarium. thats because all my live plants were very small. i will be taking out the last plastic plant very soon because now my plants are growing like "weeds" lol . it's only been a little over a week since i put the substrate in the aquarium . thanks for making a great product available. jan

Foggy water

I purchased this substrate off this website about a week ago. I received it yesterday. I was a little skeptical about the fact that it says you don't have to rinse it. I didn't, and emptied the water content out of the bag like the directions say. I scooped it out into my 20 gallon and stirred it up with the black sand I already had in there. When I was finished, my water was so cloudy I couldnt see 2 inches into the tank. I then read the reviews on this item, and just about everyone said it will NOT cloud your water. So, with nothing to do but to wait, I let my two filters clear it up. It was pretty much clear this morning, but not crystal. I still needed to level it out and such so thats exactly what I did. And whaddya know, it clouded up my water again! I have an itty bitty 2 gallon filled with guppies that are supposed to be in the 20 gallon, but cannot be because of the clouded water. I have no plants as of yet, but Im planning to get some asap. So far, Im very dissatisfied with this product. I have a feeling that every time I decorate or put something into the substrate, the water will cloud up. Looks like I'll be spending money on a water clarifier. :/

Eco Complete is not messy at all. You open the package and put it in your aquarium and then put your plants in. No mess at all. No rinsing, etc. It has the good bacteria in it to help with tank cycling.

Great Substrate!

I love this substrate. It is inert (which means it will not break down like other plant substrates) and filled with goodies that your plants (and tank) need. Just open the bag, pour it out in your tank, and level it out. No cleaning/rinsing needed at all! Wait 5-10 minutes for things to settle and fill your tank up. No cloudy water, no fuss, no mess, no problems. For those wondering, the gravel is similar to lava rock chards. It's sorted well for a nice even patricle size, dark black, and even shiny! Do yourself a favor and buy it now. You won't regret it.
