"When I saw this cage on the shelf, I thought "Oh, cool, it looks like a fun cage." Indeed it is a fun cage...for the hamster. It's a pain to put together for the pet owner. It's also a pain to clean.
My hamster brought bedding and food into the wheel. At night, we could hear the food bouncing around as she ran. After 2 nights, the wheel itself started getting really loud. The plastic parts holding it in start to loosen up and move around, causing the annoying sound of plastic crashing together. The plastic wheels that allowed it to circle around on the track also started squeaking.
Furthermore, the holes in the bottom of the wheel allow for urine to and feces to fall out and onto whatever surface your cage is resting on. It's difficult to clean the wheel, as well, because you can't open it up to scrub it, and there's little airflow in it so it doesn't dry fast.
We eventually nixed the wheel, which was the biggest pain, and opted for a silent wheel, and a little critter-lookout. Now it's not so bad, but I kind of wish I had gotten a cage which didn't limit my redecoration habits thanks to the small petting zone being in the way half the time.
The only downside to getting rid of the wheel was that we couldn't use the slide anymore. It only works with one of the holes, and that same hold is incompatible with any other critter-trail add on. You end up using it for either the water bottle, or plugging it up with the little yellow stopper that comes with the cage. I really liked that slide...and so did my Anya. It's a shame I can't use it anymore."
