I bought this in the store to try it out. There's too much stuff in the tube, it ends up running down all over the cat's back and it doesn't get absorbed. He ended up licking it, drooling, darting all over the place in obvious distress and I had put him into an Elizabethean collar just to stop him from grooming himself. The following day his back was pasted with the stuff and he scratched half his fur off at the spot where I applied the gel. He seemed to be okay when I washed it off with dish-washing soap (according to other reviews it doesn't come off with regular soap). Altogether not worth the money you're saving because your cat could easily end up at the vet. The two other tubes are going into the trash. I will never use anything but Frontline again, and certainly not before reading online reviews.
Applied product per package directions. It left a greasy mess on cat's hair that took almost a week to go away. Checked the cat 9 days after applying and she was covered in very active fleas and was shedding flea eggs too. After trying to flea comb her, I gave up and bathed her in a mild puppy/kitten shampoo. This bath did more to kill the fleas than the product. I got over 200 fleas off her! Today bought Sentry Fiproguard to see if it works any better.
So I've read all these reviews saying how horrible this product was but I was in a situation. The house we've recently moved into used to be occupied with 6+ outdoor cats and I have an exclusive indoor only cat that has never had a problem with fleas...needless to say my poor cat became infested as well as kept getting tapeworm from ingesting the fleas. I couldn't afford the more expensive flea deterring products but HAD to do something with the fleas so I bought these drops. We have used them for around a month so far and I must say the difference is great. PROS: Works...sort of. We still see the occasional flea but I can pick em off or brush them out no big deal. The smell is actually quite nice for anti-flea drops. CONS: The drops take FOREVER to get absorbed/rubbed off...my cat still has a patch of it and we are about to reapply for next month. Overall, not a horrible product but not great...you get pretty good protection for what the cost is.
I would givie this product no paws if I could. The gel that you apply is a huge amount for one application and it does not absorb and go away like the heartguard drops I give my dog. My poor kitty had a huge patch of icky stiff gel all over the back of her head and I could tell that she was miserable. After 24 hours (per package guidelines) I used a wet washcloth to try and get it out of her fur and after 3 tries it's still not out. Not only that, she is still scrathing so I'm pretty sure that the fleas are still there! This product is the absolute worst - I am so upset that I wasted money and made my kitty wear that nasty stuff in her hair. And she still has fleas! I will go buy Advantage and throw this Hartz away.
I treated the house and shampooed my cat, removing all mature fleas and applied this product the next day per instructions to do the rest. I gave the drops 3 days to do the job, but another deep inspection showed fleas moving about directly around her neck in the exact spot the product was applied. My 'savings' ended up costing more in the long run.
We switched over to Hartz from Advantage to save money. BIG MISTAKE. Our cat immediately started scratching the area we placed the drop, then actually rolled in her water bowl as well. She is deathly afraid of water, so this was quite unusual. She also started losing hair at the point of application almost immediately. We cleaned it off as soon as we could. Switching back to the more expensive but save advantage.
