Good gate, but the handle broke

"I've had this gate for ~5 years. This gate is pretty nice and sturdy and has held up with a small dog and a 2 year old. Unfortunately, the plastic handle broke early on. I was able to keep it together with some duct tape for the last 5 years, but it finally completely fell apart this morning. I was looking to see if I could get a replacement handle, but it looks like others have run into the same issue and have not been able to get a replacement part. It's a shame that I have to throw the gate away, but without a working handle, it ain't much good."

"Can be a bit fiddly to fit if you have no-one to hold it, but it's quite do-able. A bit of common sense is needed to make sure it is not twisted so the top and bottom locators both align. Also, make sure you don't over-tighten the top fixings. The handle mechanism is plastic but you would certainly have to be heavy handed to break it. If you have a small puppy or toy dog then the extra bars supplied with it prevent "Houdini" routines around the sides."

"This was a great gate. I just wished it would have expanded a little more. Unfortunately I didn't measure the width of the opening and it was too short. I was even thinking of building the wall out to accomidate this gate. My husband returned it the next day. We are still looking for a decent looking gate. This one was perfect."

"I have 4 Pit Bull Dogs. 2 of which are males, that do not like one another. I have to keep them apart. The gates have taken a lot of stress from the dogs, and my self too. They are wonderful!! I love my dogs and hate to see them fighting all the time. So if you have the same problems, I highly reccommend the gates."

"I have had this gate for 2.5 years and I love it. I have 2 pomeranians and I could not get along without this gate. It is across my bathroom door and gets almost daily use and I have never had any problem with it whatsoever. It swings both or either way and you can control that by the tab on the bottom of the gate. It is sturdy - and the vertical rods are less than 2" apart - so if you have a dog that small - your dog is TINY. I am putting that measurement here so you can measure what they can get through before you buy. I have had 3 or 4 other gates - all work, but this one works the best, is the easiest to use, stays in place, really looks fine, is the sturdiest and never a mechanical problem - that is it works all the time, everytime, never breaks. I leave it up even when I am not using it as it is so unobtrustive. I cannot imagine the problems some of the other reviewers seem to have with it. I find it the perfect pet or child gate and I recommend it."

"I purchased two of these gates for an area in my home where my doggies stay during the day. They are functional and considering they are gates, they don't look absolutely horrible. The quality is pretty decent. I have read some other reviews and to be honest, I can see where some people have had issues with the handles. I think it could be hit or miss. 1 gate gets most use, the handle works great. The other, I worry about but so far it is fine. They really serve a purpose and its been a year of happiness for me and my pooches having these gates. I dog sit a neighbors dog and he is a jumper but has NEVER jumped my gate to get at my cat. He loves to chase cats. So it must seem a bit too high for him! I love the gates. I wish anyone luck with theirs. Mine work perfect!"

"I bought this gate before Christmas and sent it back about 3 days after i got it. I have 2 Yorkies and they both and fit through the door way extension and get out. The gate also arrived with a broken handel. It was disappointmenting since it wasn't a cheap product to purchase. I would not recommend this gate to people with small dogs."

"Don't buy this gate!! It works for a while, then the handle breaks!! The gate was expensive and looked very sturdy. The handle mechanism is cheap junk and there are no replacement parts. Like a fool I went and bought a 2nd gate thinking something must just be wrong with the first....well guess what??? It happened again. Now I am really out of $$$$. Do yourself a favor, don't buy it. The people that wrote good reviews probably haven't had it for too long. A very disgruntled consumer!!!!"

"Until Charley the Boston Terrier got big enough to jump over it! I have been very pleased with this gate. Easy to install, the latch & hinges run smoothly, and the appearance is unobtrusive. "this expensive gate simply does not do its job. we have baseboard moldings which make the top part of the gate needing to be extended further than the bottom. you simply cannot do it with this gate; the closing mechanism gets out of whack. my husband & i spent over an hour trying to make it work on different doorways & finally just gave up."

"This gate was the worst purchase - in less than a year the screw mounts were stripped and the handle came apart. Initially I loved it but it has not held up at all. When I called Four Paws to purchase a replacement handle - I was told they did not sell them seperately. I now have two metal gates that everything has broken except the metal. "Having seen this gate in action at a friend's house, I was quick to go online to purchase it. With kids, a cat and dog, there was a huge need for a sturdy, well made gate in our home. However, once we received delivery, though the assembly was simple and tool-free, the frame was bent, the hole didn't align with the locking mechanism on the base of the unit, and the hand latch was jammed. Whether it was through mishandling in delivery or damage in the factory, this piece was promptly returned to the nearest PetCo store and I now have to search for another one. Too bad since I thought it worked great at our friend's home. I just don't like buying something and having it be defective right out of the box. Had it worked properly, I'd have bought two more for the rest of our house."

Good product, but anticipate not fitting your hall

"I have a Mini Dachund and she is a climber. But not with this gate. She is still trying to solve this puzzle. She cannot go thru or over or climb. This is the best $ bucks I have spent to save my carpet during house breaking. Instructions are clear, design of pressure screws to gate could be a bit better. The gate is wide with included extenders but you should anticipate having to either trim floor molding or adding wood spacers to get solid fit to wall. Over tighting the top pressure screws take assembly out of square and cause difficulty in opening or closing the gate. You need to place bottom of gate against floor and use bottom pressure screws to lock gate in place. Then, you can loosen top pressure screw to do the job and leave gate square. Suggestion: Get a hand saw and 2X1 or better wood spacer to square up your wall connection. A second set of hands makes installation much easier."

"This gate has been fantastic, it has been used with an English Mastiff Pup who at 5 months weighs over 80 lbs, the gate has held up to his leaning and occassional pawing. The hinges, locks, mounts etc. have worked without flaw and have not caused any damage to my walls. Overall it is an excellent product for the money."
