Great Product
Date: December 29, 2008
"I have used this over the last two or three years and it makes clean up so much easier, especially when I do not need to make a water change. It cleans the debris out of the gravel without disturbing my rooted plants. My grandson just over fed my fish and this was a great tool
to use to clean up the excess food.

OK. Does what it says
Date: November 17, 2008
"The build construction seems good, this is very quiet in operation. It does do a good job, in my 55 gallon, of picking up sludge.
I'm sure there are finer filters out there though. I would have paid more for a unit that would not leave the water cloudy afterwards. I hope Eheim improves on this and comes out with an upgrade kit.
Otherwise I think it's a great product for the money. My tank uses an automatic water changer so now there is no more need for siphons for me."

Passable product
Date: August 6, 2008
"I have used this product immediately after receiving it. It is convenient for me to clean my 20 gallon tank. Regarding the performance that I expect it is passable. It is as strong as I wish. If you look for a combination of convenience and good performance, then this product isn't for you. I graded this product at the level of fourth paw to appreciate its convenience. Thanks."

excellent
Date: July 16, 2008
"This is a great product! I used to have battery operated aquarium cleaners and love them. But they were always too short and I still had to change the water because the filtering part wasn't good enough. I have 75G aquarium with underground filter and additional double Tetra filter. This cleaner did an amazing job! Very easy assembly, enough power for debris but not gravel. The filtering is great! The water comes up a little bit cloudy but clears in 2-5 minutes. A bit expensive but I hope it will last longer."

Poor suction!
Date: June 6, 2008
"I bought this so I wouldn't have to syphon the "old school" way. There is hardly any suction at all. The design is great. If had more suction and a way the rocks would not get stuck in the impeller over and over again. I would like this. Don't waste your money."

Absolutely Awesome
Date: June 5, 2008
"This product was excellent. I have 3 smaller tanks (5-10gal) and it cleaned the gravel in minutes. I was a little hesitant at first because of the price, but I would gladly pay more knowing how well it works. It makes cleaning fun its so easy."

Great for bigger/taller tanks
Date: May 17, 2008
"This works really well on my 20 gal hexagon tank. It is very easy to use, and to clean out the filter when I was done. However it does not work on my 10 gallon tanks. It mostly just stirs up the muck, instead of sucking it up. I seems to work best when the filter part is mostly under water, and my smaller 10 gal tanks are too short."

Great for the price!
Date: April 12, 2008
"I have tried aquarium vacs at every level from the air pump driven budget models to the cannister attachment type and found this one the best balance of price and quality. I have not tried any of the large, external pump driven standalone models, and I assume that for hundreds of dollars they would outperform this one, but for the price the "sludge extractor" can't be beat.
I have vacuumed both gravel and sand substrate aquariums between 12 and 30 gallons with it and it worked very well in both cases. It is a little slow, of course, because if the impeller were too fast it would suck up too much gravel or sand, but with just a little patience it did an excellent job. It is a little tricky with shallower tanks where the mesh cannister can't be completely submerged, but with careful tilting can be made to work. In a 29g or larger it is no problem at all. Best suction is achieved without the extension tube, which will require you to get your hands wet, but that's never been a problem for me. Assembly and cleaning is also very easy.
I recommend this vacuum to anyone cleaning modestly sized aquariums.

Amazing
Date: February 22, 2008
"I am relatively new to fish keeping and just purchased this cleaner. The item was shipped promptly and everything I had read about it was true. It is quiet, and has awesome suction for such a small unit. Very unintrusive to the fish, they were actually curious and came to see what I was doing. Runs on 4 AA batteries which btw are included, "Duracell" no less! Highly recommend, if you want to clean more of the gravel than you can with a partial water change."

Works great
Date: January 15, 2008
"The product is easy to assemble, don't even need to read directions. It sucks up fish waste right away without any need to disturb the sand. It is also good for sucking up algae after you scrape it off the tank. It won't pick up any heavy algae thats blooming on the surface of the sand though. It barely suctions any sand. This is a good thing if you have hermit crabs, you can run them over with the tip and they stay on the bottom, and it won't suck up any small fish by accident either. I don't know the exact affects on good bacteria in your sand and water being removed by the vaccum, but so far I have had no problems with my water quality. One of my fish's has a large bio load so I use it every day to clean up after him. I have been using it for about two weeks. It is very easy to take apart and clean as well."

Really Works!!!
Date: December 8, 2007
"Ok, so all the experts say, "Feed only what your fish will eat in 3 to 5 minutes and remove the remaining food." What they don't say is how to do that without removing water and making a big mess. And I'm not counting fish flakes. I solved the mess problem but do not want to remove the tank water or any of my bio's who have set up housekeeping in the gravel. At first glance, I thought this product attached to a wet vac. Looking more closely, I noticed it was battery operated and worked exactly like my pool cleaner. Then I noticed the price. Purchased it anyway with the assurance it could be returned if I didn't like it.
Put it together (with my eyes closed and hands tied behind my back) and placed it in my 70 gal tank and a miracle occurred. Sludge and debris were being removed quite efficiently. No priming, no lines, no buckets or doors open to winter weather. It just kept cleaning until I decided I was done. It is quiet and does not disturb my fish. They actually were very curious about it. Reaches into corners and around objects. Batteries last about 4 hours. And when was the last time you purchased an item that came with batteries?
I could go on and on but recommend every fish groupie buy one and use it. We love our fish and a clean tank. This product will improve your tank and make your life easier. Which means you will use it more often and if your fish could, they would thank you. The price? Worth every penny.
I purchased this product from my local PETCO (thanks guys). NO CRACKS anywhere. Keep in mind it is not something you can throw or mishandle or let kids play with. It snaps together quickly and the disconnect tabs for the collection container don't need to be forced. Great product. Thanks Eheim and please make a smaller version for my turtle tank and a larger version for my 300 gallon tank. Three 9" Oranda's can be seriously messy.

Fantastic Product! Works Great!
Date: December 6, 2007
"I had bought a much cheaper version in the past, and had very poor results--I needed something to clean the sludge, and have had a Python system for several years---The only "problem" with the Python, is it removes the water too fast, so I could not get a proper cleaning job done without draining, filling, draining, filling, etc., over and over---not only very time consuming, but not the best thing for the fish!! So, I had been looking for something like this, and found it for twice the price on another site, I decided to "Google" the product name, and up pops Petco! I am sooo glad it did! Not only was/is the price much better, but for the use I had in mind, this is great! It doesnt remove the water, has excellent suction/cleaning power, Is lightweight, and very easy to use! It also comes with plenty of length, which you can shorten or lengthen to fit almost any tank out there---I have 3 tanks, including a difficult to clean corner unit---This sludge remover will do all you hope--It doesnt disturb the lower layers of beneficial bacteria, but removes as much , or as little, as you like--- The filter is easy to remove and clean, and with a gasket sealing system that actually works, you can leave the unit totally submerged in the tank, while you remove and clean/replace the filter---saves time, and you dont have to carry a dripping, wet, nasty tool through the house! I cannot say enough in praise of this product---simply a fantastic tool that every aquarium owner should consider!"

WOW - How Great
Date: November 19, 2007
"Well I have to say that I am always skeptical when I see items like this but looking at the name brand, I figure sure ok. Fact is I have a 135g, 2-55g 2-20g tanks and just a pain to go thru them all so it takes a complete day. This little unit makes cleaning so quick and easy. I was able to clean my 55 gallon cichlid tank with ease. Great thing is that with this unit you can clean and clean and clean and not worry about water overflowing the stupid bucket or anything like that. So you can do a more thorough job without all the mess or hassle. I have just used it once so far and it has been worth every penny. I am not sure how well they hold up yet but if I have to I will buy one every six months just because it’s so convenient. With any item there are always issues here and there. This is the first Eheim product I have purchase so I am sure they will stand behind the product."

No quality control - 5 defective units in a row!
Date: June 23, 2007
"This would be great - if the cap that holds the batteries in wasn't cracked on all 5 of these I have received so far. I ordered on-line and was shipped 4 defective ones in a row before I was told they would just return my money. I went to a store and bought one, and guess what... 5 out of 5 had the crack in the same place from where the manufacturer slammed the cap on too tight and cracked it. Water gets in the battery compartment with this crack there. It is useless with this defect. I want this product. I wish the manufacturer would produce a batch without the crack. I tried calling them and leaving a message, but their voicemail box is full."

Eheim Sludge Extractor
Date: March 3, 2007
"I purchased this unit which was defective & failed. Petco promptly replaced the unit.
I unpacked the new unit after letting it warm up to room temperature from the cold delivery truck. I inspected the unit and found that there were cracks in the battery department cap from where it had been forced into place at the factory. I tried the unit and it worked reasonably well even though I had to hold down the battery cap with my thumb to keep it working. When I went to use it again, it would only run at half speed with fresh batteries and after making sure the impeller and syphon tubes were clear.
I have emailed Eheim and left several phone messages. They have been unreponsive to this point.
I have changed my opinion. Two defective units in a row; the unit is not worth any expense or time to deal with its quirks. You're better off using a cheap air powered gravel vac or better yet, get yourself a canister type filter that has a gravel vac attachment for the suction side of the filter like a Marineland Magnum 350 or HOT Magnum 250.
Eheim or its other companies will not see another dime of my money."
